The CEBA (Center for the study of biodiversity in Amazonia) brings together a network of 11 internationally recognized French research teams involved in biodiversity research in Amazonia in different aspects: biodiscovery, ecology, genetics, modeling, biodiversity & public health, social sciences, etc.

It fosters cutting-edge research on biodiversity in French Guiana and enables the partner teams to lead joint projects thanks to long-term funding.

The teams of the CEBA, based in French Guiana, in mainland France and in the French Antilles, mobilize in total around a hundred people in its permanent staff (researchers, engineers, etc.). The laboratories members of the CEBA are the following:

  • AMAP (botAny and bioinforMatics of Plant Architecture) in Cayenne and Montpellier;
  • Biogeco (Biodiversity, Genes and Communities) in Bordeaux;
  • EcoFoG (Ecology of Forests in French Guiana) in Kourou and Cayenne;
  • EDB (Evolution and Biological Diversity) in Toulouse;
  • EEF (Ecology and Ecophysiology of Forests) in Nancy;
  • Epat (Epidemiology of Tropical Parasitic Diseases) in Cayenne;
  • ICSN (Institute for the Chemistry of Natural Substances) in Gif-sur-Yvette;
  • IPG (Institut Pasteur of French Guiana) in Cayenne;
  • LC2S (Caribbean Laboratory of Social Sciences) in Martinique and Guadeloupe;
  • LEEISA (Ecology, Environment and Interactions in Amazonian Systems) in Cayenne;
  • Mivegec (Infectious Diseases and Vectors: Ecology, Genetics, Evolution and Control) in Montpellier.

The CEBA was labelled « Laboratoire d’Excellence » in 2011 in the framework of the calls of proposals launched by the French National Research Agency (ANR) in the Investissements d’Avenir programme (“Investments for the Future”). It will conduct its activities from 2011 to 2019.
