Modélisation des flux de biomasse sur des parcelles de forêts exploitées en Amazonie

A great part of Amazonian forests are selectively logged in a polycyclic harvest system : understanding their post-logging dynamics is thus of primary importance to assess the carbon storage capacity and the characteristics of the forest that will be found in the next logging cycle.

In this study, we used a network of 100 permanent sample plots in 8 sites spread across the Amazon basin to assess post-logging biomass fluxes (recruitment, growth and mortality). We modeled the temporal evolution of these biomass fluxes recruitment, growth and mortality) for survivors and recruits as well as their relative importance in explaining biomass recovery, and integrated the variability due to the environment, the logging intensity and the initial stand biomass.

Our results indicate that the two key drivers of post-logging biomass fluxes are the logging intensity (i.e. the relative biomass loss due to logging) and the initial boveground biomass of the logged plot. High levels of biomass losses and low initial above-ground biomass are correlated with high biomass gain from recruitment in Amazonian forests. Environmental factors had little additional weight in explaining the basin-wide variations of post-logging biomass fluxes.

Knowing the plot initial biomass and the percentage of biomass lost during the logging activities should thus be enough for forest managers to assess the post-logging dynamics of the forest in the Amazon basin.
