Past history of the Amazonian forest

The paper «Phylogeography of a species complex of lowland Neotropical rain forest trees (Carapa, Meliaceae)» by Caroline Scotti-Saintagne et al., realized within the Ecological Genetics lab at EcoFog in part of the European project (SEEDSOURCE), has now been accepted for publication in the Journal of Biogeography. This population genetics survey based on a huge sampling in Neotropics (Guiana Shield, Central and Western Amazonia, Central America), revealed that the biogeographic history of Carapa in the Neotropics was shaped by Neogene perturbations (between 2.6 et 23 million years ago) and that the center of genetic diversification was located in Central Amazonia. This paper contributes to better understand how past climatic and geological perturbations have influenced the distribution of the actual biodiversity.
